As always, tonight's installment uses movies and music, the Bible and pop culture, to look at our real problems, and to explore the Christian response to them. Part 6 (the final session) is "What Would Scrooge Do?: Gratitude, Honesty, and Astonishment," concludes the series by looking at what a life might look like under the staggering Christian reality of Grace. Join others in their 20s and 30s and find out in the 6-part “Good News for People with Big Problems.” This series uses movies and music, the Bible and pop culture, to look at our real problems, and to explore the Christian response to them. Part 3, “Check Out Any Time You Like (But You Can Never Leave)" deals with depression, powerlessness, and... hope.

What can these people teach us about the Christian message? And what can Christianity offer in light of the stress and problems in your life?

Join us for "Good News for People with Big Problems." Hosted by Anchor, a group of people in their 20s and 30s, and featuring pastor/speaker/blogger Aaron Zimmerman, this six-part series examines what the basic Christian message might have to say in light of the real stresses and problems of life, while weaving together pop culture, art, music, movies, and literature with the Biblical diagnosis of reality.

All 20s and 30s invited, whether you go to church, left church, or never went to church. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re very interested in the questions and the conversation.

Anchor's Annual Christmas Party: Friday, Dec 17

We'll be at the home of Joan and Dan Driscoll in Edgeworth (304 Quaker Rd., corner of Pine and Quaker; the site of some of our summer Bible studies). Anchor starts its own Christmas special on Weds, Dec 1, with our first installment of “Jingle Bell Rock: Finding Meaning in the Pop Music of Christmas.” From The Ramones, to the Killers, to The Band, and even the Jackson 5, everybody has a Christmas song. What is so powerful about Christmas? We’ll explore this question through the lens of scripture and some of the more interesting pop/rock Christmas songs that have come out over the years. Fall Is In The Air, And Anchor Is Gearing Up

When is Cool Uncool?

Remember that kid in high school that tried too be hard to be cool? The trying too hard totally short-circuits whatever latent coolness, if any, that may have been there.

There's this thing now where churches try to be cool for coolness' sake, it seems. Sometimes words like authentic or relevant are used. (Note: Any time anything has to point out that it is relevant or authentic, it is by definition neither. For example, doctors are both relevant and authentic, but you never saw one advertising himself or herself as such. If you have to say it, it's not true.)

Anyways, there's a great post over at the Mockingbird blog by my buddy Dave, responding to a WSJ article about the "Cool Church" trend. Both are worth a read.

Remember that abysmal Robin Hood movie with Mr. Dances with Wolves? Well, Russell Crowe is bringing back Robin Hood's good name (and 86ing the mullet) in a great new Robin Hood flick. It looks considerably darker and more interesting than the last time this Medieval vigilante graced the screen. Plus, it was directed by Ridley Scott, of Aliens and Gladiator fame.

Join Anchor on Tues, June 26, as we take advantage of the super-cheap Tuesday night rate at the fantastic new Cinemark theater (map and directions here) at Robinson and see one of the summer's first blockbusters.

Anchor's Lenten Hiatus

Lent is always (paradoxically) a great time at St. Stephen's. We've got our powerful Ash Wednesday service on Weds, Feb 17, at 7:30 pm, and then on every Weds after that (Feb 24-Mar 24) we have our fantastic Lenten Supper Series. Delicious potluck suppers, great speakers, and a wonderful time to meet people from across the church. This year, the theme for our speakers is "The Bible's Biggest Losers (Old Testament Edition)." Each week, the speaker will take a character from the Old Testament, look at that person's very real faults and failures, while pointing out how God was still able to use these tarnished saints. Again, these are on Weds nights from 6:30-8:30 pm in Grace Commons. They are a blast! (Click here for more info and a list of speakers.)

But wait! Doesn't Anchor meet on Wednesday nights? Typically, yes. But during Lent, we take a break from our Weds night events so that you can take part in the awesome stuff St. Stephen's has during Lent. Hope to see you there!

Join us for our third Evensong service on Weds, Dec 9, 7:30-8:30 pm in the St. Stephen's Sanctuary.

This Anglican service of Evening Prayer, weaves together our rich tradition of scripture, prayer, and song. The music is in a modern folk style, drawing from traditional hymns and newer Christian songs. The music this Wednesday will also include some treasured Christmas carols.

As always, the service is open to the entire church.

Free childcare is available in the nursery.

Theology on Tap is a four-week series where young adults meet to talk about faith and life, have a pint, think deep thoughts, and meet great people. We’ll meet at Little Athens in Sewickley at 6:30 PM beginning Weds, Oct 14. Grab a bite and a brew (on your own dime--but we arranged for half-price appetizers!) and then we'll listen to a great speaker each week.

Evensong

It has been said that worship is about having our sanity restored and getting in touch with Reality. In that spirit, Anchor would like to invite the entire St. Stephen’s family (and friends) of all ages (this even is not just for young adults!) to Evensong, a new service of prayer and praise, on Weds, Oct 7, at 7:30 PM, in the Sanctuary. Come join us as we sing songs that remind us of that place where, as the Prayer Book says, “true joys are to be found.”

And what’s the meaning of the name? Evensong is simply the traditional Anglican term for Evening Prayer.

ASHTON WAS WRONG

After our fall kickoff on Sept 17 (see below), our regular Wednesday night gatherings begin on Sept 23 with a two-part series called "Ashton Was Wrong: Jesus Is Not Your Homeboy."

What is this series all about? I'm not trying to pick on the step-dad of Bruce Willis' kids. But I do think Mr. Kutcher is an interesting "case study" of a contemporary young adult. And a few years ago, I was struck by the photo of him wearing the t-shirt at right, reading "Jesus is my homeboy."

In this series, I want to talk about this common idea of Jesus as our buddy, a laid-back dude. (Think about Will Ferrell's hilarious and brilliant prayer to "dear tiny Baby Jesus, with golden fleece diapers" and his "baby Jesus powers" in Talladega Nights, or go back to the very groovy Doobie Brothers' "Jesus Is Just Alright With Me.") In contrast to this view of Jesus, I want to look at who he really is and how he works in our lives.

In my conversations with young adults (and as one myself), I find a lot of people are confused, lonely, guilty, and making lots of choices that leave them feeling pretty bad in the morning. And in light of this, it's pretty clear to me that we need more than a Divine Homeboy. And in the Bible, Jesus certainly offers a lot more.

So what's this series about? Essentially, for people going through their 20s and 30s, I'm trying to answer the question: How does Jesus work in our lives? As always, my hope is to be real, honest, funny, and to ultimately give some good news.

Our series begins Weds, Sept 23, at 6:30 pm in Grace Commons at St. Stephen's Church.

It's especially hard when you go through it alone. That's why Anchor has small groups of men and women that meet once a week to provide the community and friendship that we all need.

What are these groups like? We meet, discuss a book we're reading together, or read a part of the Bible and talk about what it means for our lives, and we pray for each other. It’s a great way to learn more about your faith, to ask questions, and to get to know people better.

I was floored when I read Mark Galli's recent blog post. Galli is the Senior Managing Editor of Christianity Today, the flagship magazine of the evangelical world. And in a day when most Christians--from pulpit to pew, liberal to conservative--present the religion of Jesus as one mostly about what you do and your self-driven improvement, Galli tells the truth: The Gospel is about what God does, not what we do. And he tells the truth about the widespread myth among Christians that we believers have "something different" about is. Read what Galli says. Think about it. Agree? Disagree? Either way, you have to respond to the points he raises. The future of the church will be largely determined by how people respond to this issue.

Remember Summer Camp? Bad food, bugs, and the unrequited love of your secret summer camp crush?

Well, we're not doing that.

But, we are having a fun, low-key, time to hang out and read the Bible and discuss it's meaning for our lives.

Poet John Berryman called Jesus the most interesting man who ever lived. Why? Find out at Anchor's five-week Bible study looking at some stories of Jesus' life. We'll be going through the Gospels (the biographies of Jesus in the New Testament) and taking a look at how Jesus interacted with a wide range of people, examining why he was such a powerful and magnetic figure. Our hope is that it would relate to your real life.

Our first meeting will be at 7:30 pm on Weds, June 24, at the Zimmerman house. Contact me for directions. Light refreshments will be provided, but you'll want to eat dinner before you come.

The Gospel Goes Pop!

Jesus never made a cameo on Seinfeld, but he shows up in pop culture all the time.

Join Anchor for dinner and discussion this Weds night. We're beginning by asking the basic question: "What is the Gospel?" From there, we'll take some examples from pop culture to illustrate the main ideas.

Why are we doing this? Often when Christianity is shown in the public media, it's in a negative way. Think of Christian characters in movies (like the preacher played by John Lithgow in Footloose, or Angela in The Office). This makes me ask a big question: Why has the Christian message failed to connect? Maybe we're saying the right thing in the wrong way. Or maybe the church is saying the wrong thing, period!

Can we try to say the right thing in a way that is meaningful? That's the hope of this discussion. Because even though Christians get a bad wrap in music, TV, and movies, Christian ideas show up in media all the time--concepts like the self-interested tendencies of all people, the inability to change our bad habits, and the power of love to transform people (Huey Lewis, anyone?).

So join Anchor on Weds night for "The Gospel Goes Pop!" Come for a fun, refreshing look at faith through a cultural lens.

Follow Up: Mick Meets Jesus

If you were at Anchor this past week when we talked about the Rolling Stones, you'll remember we talked about Mick Jagger's spiritual quest beginning with "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and moving to "Saint of Me." We ended with no resolution. Ultimately, it seemed, Jagger was unable to come to terms with Christianity. But my friend Dave Zahl turned me on to Jagger's 2001 song, "Joy." It's about as clear a depiction of conversion as I've ever seen. It's an amazing song.

“Each week we’ll listen to some great rock songs — some well-known, some more obscure,” said Rev. Aaron Zimmerman, the associate pastor.

The group then will discuss how the writers of those songs expressed their deepest yearnings.

“We’ll explore how the person and message of Jesus might offer a word of hope to people who can’t get no satisfaction,” Zimmerman said, lifting a line from the Rolling Stones which are the featured band for the first session.

On April 22, the discussion turns to ’80s hair bands like Ratt, Poison and Guns ’n’ Roses. On April 29, the group will chat about the Who, the Police and the Smiths, while on May 6 the topic is U2.

Scott Tady Knows What's Going On

Hi All. Just learned about the Beaver County Times entertainment columnist, Scott Tady. He has a great column which can be found at http://www.timesonline.com/. (Click on Entertainment, then Scott Tady.) Apparently, he has some love for those of us in northen Allegheny County. He just wrote this about Sewickley:

ROCKING IN SEWICKLEY
Ah, Sewickley — the home of sports stars, spas, boutiques and Bruegger’s. About all the borough lacks is a live music scene, though that’s starting to change thanks to the Sewickley Hotel. Stroll into the Sewickley Hotel any Wednesday night and you’ll hear Hewlett-Anderson, a duo featuring singer-guitarist Pete Hewlett, who has toured with Billy Joel, Carly Simon and Joe Jackson, and keyboardist Scott Anderson, the music director of WQED-TV’s “Live from Studio A.” On Friday nights, the Sewickley Hotel offers Carnegie Mellon voice professor Betsy Lawrence, though for a few weeks in April that gig goes to Hermie Granati and his dueling pianos. On Saturday nights, the Beaver Street venue presents acoustic guitarist Rick Revetta hosting an open-mic. That’s an open mic for people with talent, quickly adds Sewickley Hotel co-owner Keith Miller.“We don’t do karaoke,” he says.

I think we heard Hewlett-Anderson when we went to the Hotel a few weeks ago after the Lenten series. If any of you go again and check out the music there, let me know how it goes.

On Tap for Weds, Apr 1: Lust and Laughs

This Wednesday, Apr 1 (seriously), continuing our Lenten tradition, Anchor will again join the St. Stephen's community for the final event in their 2009 Lenten series, "Virtues and Vices." The Topic this Wednesday night is Lust. The presenter is NOT the Church Lady, but Dana Henry. Dana is a professional counselor and an amazing person, in addition to being the wife of St. Stephen's Associate Rector Bill Henry and mother to three wonderful kids.

Afterwards, we'll all head to Sweetwater Grill for some good conversation, good beverages, and good times.

Potluck dinner at the church at 6:30 pm.

Presentation starts around 7:20. Childcare available for this part of the evening.

Anchor's new series, "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction: Human Longing in Rock n Roll," begins April 15. But before that, let's bowl!

Where: Economy Lanes in Ambridge (Check their website for directions)

What: Bowl till you drop. It’s only a buck a game and there is a place there to grab some food inexpensively as well (menu on website).

Anchor Tonight, March 25

So what’s going on tonight with Anchor?

Well, as we’ve been doing the past couple weeks, Anchor is going to the St. Stephen’s Lenten series, followed by a trip to the Sweetwater Grill for some libations and conversations. Tonight, the Rev. Dr. Leander Harding is speaking about gluttony (continuing with the Seven Deadly Sins theme). Leander is an old professor of mine from seminary. He is very funny, very bright, and very wise. He also used to be a shepherd and can play a mean Blues harmonica. Should be a good evening. The delicious (and free!) potluck dinner begins at 6:30 pm, and Leander’s presentation starts at 7:15 or so. There is free childcare during the talk.

Afterwards, we’ll head over to Sweetwater Grill. We’ll be there from about 8:45 or 9 onwards.

Anchor's New Series Rocks

Are you ready to rock? Beginning April 15, we’re starting a new dinner-and-discussion series called “(Can’t Get No) Satisfaction: Human Longing in Rock and Roll.” Rock came from the Blues. As a result, from its birth, Rock has been a vehicle for expressing the deepest longings of the human heart. Each week, we’ll listen to some great Rock songs (some well-known, some more obscure) and see how the artists gave voice to these longings. And we’ll explore how the person and message of Jesus might offer a word of hope to people who can’t get no satisfaction.
